Een kleine groep van 4 reizigers besloot dat Zuid-Korea dit jaar nog op de agenda moest prijken en reisde daarom af richting het Aziatische land. Na aankomst op de luchthaven van Incheon, op dinsdag 20 oktober, en de reguliere verplichtingen (bagage, pinnen, huurauto, etc.) vertrokken we richting het centrum van Seoul om die middag nog het War Memorial of Korea te bezoeken. Hoewel een memorial, heeft de locatie veel gelijkenissen met een museum. Op de locatie staat dan ook een behoorlijke collectie aan militaire vliegtuigen. Na het bezoek hier hebben we nog een paar andere locaties met preserved toestellen bezocht, alvorens richting Dongtan te rijden voor de overnachting.

Op woensdag, 21 oktober, waren we al relatief vroeg uit de veren om niets te missen van de open dag op Osan Air Base. Het ongelooflijk heldere weer had een positieve weerslag op de stemming in de auto en al snel stonden we op het vliegveld (nadat eerst een retourtje auto was gemaakt om de rugzakken terug te brengen, de toelatingseisen waren streng). De static was, met enige moeite, redelijk te fotograferen en, uiteraard, bijzonder interessant. De delegatie van de Zuid-Koreaanse luchtmacht was redelijk groot. De vliegshow werd gedomineerd door de aanwezigheid van de Thunderbirds. De CSAR-demo, met A-10’s, F-16’s en helikopters was een fraaie toevoeging. Aan het einde van de show ontstond de indruk dat de Koreaanse toestellen nog plannen hadden om te vertrekken. De bewaking was echter van mening dat iedereen van het veld gedirigeerd moest worden. Gelukkig zaten we net op tijd in een fuik waar vandaan de taxiënde Koreaanse luchtmacht fighters met zon in de rug op de rolbaan gefotografeerd konden worden. Voor de volgende dag stond een bezoek aan het KAI museum op Sacheon op de planning en daarvoor moesten nog wat kilometers gemaakt worden. Tegen 21.00 uur werd de auto op de parkeerplaats van een hotel in Jinju geparkeerd.

Het Korean Aerospace Industries museum op Sacheon werd op donderdag al snel gevonden en bewonderd (waaronder de aanwezige B-29). Tegelijkertijd werd een aantal KT-1’s van de lokale trainingswing genoteerd en een Orion die voor onderhoud bij KAI stond. Na Sacheon ging de reis weer naar het noorden. Op weg naar Seongmu werd ook het National Cemetery van Daejeon bezocht. Op deze begraafplaats staat wederom een fraaie collectie vliegtuigen. Bij de Air Force Academy op Seongmu staat een nog veel grotere collectie en ook die werd in een prachtig herfstzonnetje bekeken en gefotografeerd. De overnachting was weer in het hotel van de eerste avond, waar we nu 4 nachten zouden verblijven.

Voor vrijdag (de 23e) was het eerste van twee bezoeken aan de Seoul airshow gepland. Een korte verkenning op donderdagmiddag had geleerd waar we ’s middags buiten het veld geen gevecht met de zon aan zouden moeten gaan en de auto werd daar op vrijdagmorgen geparkeerd. Het evenement, ook bekend als Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition, bracht wederom een mooie collectie aan Koreaanse en Amerikaanse luchtmacht toestellen. Behalve de toestellen van de static was er ’s morgens veel beweging van C-130’s en CN235’s die mensen kwamen brengen voor de parade die ’s middags gepland stond. Ter ere van het 60-jarige bestaan van de Republic of Korea Air Force waren voor die middag diverse activiteiten gepland. Het meeste interessante was natuurlijk de flypast van 60 toestellen. Toen de flypast aan het einde van de middag begon stonden we netjes op de plek die we de dag ervoor uitgekozen hadden.

Omdat de weersverwachting voor zaterdag beter was dan voor zondag werd besloten op zaterdag meteen ook voor een tweede keer naar de show te gaan (in plaats van zondag). Deze zaterdag was, op de flypast na, vergelijkbaar met vrijdag. De Black Eagles verrasten met hun T 50’s, die toch veel meer op een fighter lijken dan de trainer-aanduiding doet vermoeden. Na wederom een dag met mooi weer en mooie vliegtuigen werd de dag afgesloten met de zoveelste perfecte Koreaanse barbecue die avond.

Het toeristische uitstapje dat voor zaterdag gepland stond was inmiddels verschoven naar zondag (vanwege de weerverwachtingen). Omdat één van de reizigers om zondag al naar huis moest werd de trip naar de grens met het noorden maar door drie mensen ondernomen. Op weg naar Imjingak werden op Paju nog wat Hughes 500 van de Koreaanse landmacht waargenomen. Vanuit Imjingak werd een bustour geboekt die ons naar de “3rd Tunnel of Aggression” bracht, the Dora Observatory en het meest noordelijke treinstation van Zuid-Korea. De reis terug naar het hotel voerde ons langs een kustlijn waar de beveiligingsmaatregelen enorm indrukwekkend waren. Het laatste stukje richting het hotel, voor de laatste overnachting, werd tevreden teruggeblikt op de score van de afgelopen week.

A small Group of 4 participants thought it was a good idea to have South Korea on the itinerary of this year and decided to head for the Asian country. On 20 October, after arrival at the airport of Incheon, and the ceremonial obligations (collecting baggage, retrieving money, rental car, etc.) we head for Seoul city centre. We want to visit the War Memorial of Korea that same afternoon. Although a memorial, the location bears much resemblance to a museum. Therefore, the premises contain quite a large collection of military aircraft. After the visit here we have visited a some more location with preserved aircraft, before heading towards Dongtan to spend the night.

On Wednesday 21 October, we were up quite early so we would not miss a thing of the open day at Osan Air Base. The incredibly clear skies had a positive influence on the mood in the car and we found ourselves on base very soon after that (after a return trip to the car to return the backpacks, security was rather tight). The static display was ok for photography, if you took your time for it, and very interesting of course. De South Korean air force delegation was rather large. The flying display was dominated by the presence of the Thunderbirds. The CSAR-demo, using A-10s, F-16s and helicopters, was a nice addition. At the end of the show the general feeling was that the Koreans were eager to leave that same day. The security was convinced that time had come to sweep the area and have the visitors leave the base. We were lucky enough to have manoeuvred ourselves in a position that the departing Korean air force fighters could be photographed while taxiing in the sun. We had scheduled a visit to the KAI museum at Sacheon for the next morning. Therefore, some driving had to be done. By 21.00 we parked the car at the parking spot of a hotel in Jinju.

On Thursday, the Korean Aerospace Industries museum at Sacheon was found and admired (the B-29 for instance) without a hitch. At the same time a number of KT-1 of the local training wing were noted and an Orion that was present for maintenance with KAI. After Sacheon we drove back to the North again. On our way to Seongmu we also visited the National Cemetery at Daejoen. On this burial site, again a nice collection of aircraft is preserved. Near the Air Force Academy at Seongmu an even larger collection if preserved and this was also gleaned at and photographed in the beautiful autumn sun. We spent the night in the hotel of the first night again. We would stay in this hotel for 4 nights this time.

For Friday (the 23rd) the first of two visits to the Seoul air show was planned. A short visit to the event on Thursday afternoon had shown us exactly where to beat the sun the next day, and this is exactly were we parked our car on this Friday morning. The event, also known at the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition, again brought a nice collection of Korean and United States Air Force aircraft. Apart from the aircraft on static display, in the morning the Korean C-130s and CN235s were rather active. Most of these aircraft brought personnel for the parade that was scheduled for the afternoon. To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Republic of Korea Air Force, a number of activities was scheduled for the afternoon. The most interesting part of the activities was the flypast of 60 aircraft of course. When the flypast started at the end of the afternoon we were on the spot that we had picked the day before.

Because the weather forecast for Saturday was better than that for Sunday, we decided to visit the Seoul air show the next day again (instead of Sunday). This Saturday was very comparable to the Friday, apart from the flypast of course. The Black Eagles were a surprise with their T 50s, since their aircraft resembled a fighter much more than the trainer-designation makes you believe. After yet another day with beautiful weather and beautiful aircraft, we ended the day with the next perfect Korean barbecue.

The touristic item, originally scheduled for Saturday, was now on the itinerary for Sunday (because of the weather forecast). Because one of the participants had to go home on this Sunday, the trip to the border with the North was undertaken by three people only. On our way to Imjingak a number of Korean army Hughes 500s were noted at Paju. From Imjingak a bustour was booked that brought us to the “3rd Tunnel of Aggression”, the Dora Observatory and the most northern train station of South Korea. The return trip to the hotel led via the coast, where the security measures were very impressive. During the final leg towards the hotel, for the final night, we comfortably looked back at a satisfying score during the week.
