De EAA AirVenture is enorm en indrukwekkend met ruim meer dan 2500 bezoekende vliegtuigen. Nu was het anders en stond de groep van tien op 21 juli 2011 al vroeg op Schiphol klaar om in te checken voor de vlucht naar Chicago. Op het programma stonden een paar fraaie items; de Thunder over Michigan airshow op het vliegveld van Willow Run (MI), de Vectren Airshow op het vliegveld van Dayton (OH), het National Museum of the USAF op Wright Patterson AFB (OH) en een aantal dagen naar de EAA AirVenture op het vliegveld van Oshkosh (WI). De langdurige douaneformaliteiten voor Amerika werden in Dublin al afgewikkeld. Daarom werden we in Chicago als een binnenlandse vlucht behandeld en konden we na afhalen van de bagage meteen op pad. Helaas was de koffer van de reisleider er niet bij, maar die werd twee dagen later opgestuurd naar het hotel. Er stond meteen een flinke rit voor de boeg naar Detroit. Nabij het Metro Airport was ons hotel voor de komende twee dagen.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_tab_section av_tab_section av-4eby094-a95f1812987e2c9f41d20702365579c1'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div id='tab-id-2-tab' class='tab' role='tab' aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" data-fake-id='#tab-id-2' aria-controls='tab-id-2-content'  itemprop=\"headline\" >22 juli 2011<\/div><div id='tab-id-2-content' class='tab_content' role='tabpanel' aria-labelledby='tab-id-2-tab' aria-hidden=\"true\"><div class='tab_inner_content invers-color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Op vrijdagochtend (22 juli) vertrokken we naar Willow Run airport waar we de hele dag in de landing hebben gestaan. Er gebeurde niet bijzonder veel omdat het op veel plekken in de VS erg slecht weer was. Bij ons was het in ieder geval droog, maar het aantal bezoekers was wat magertjes. In de namiddag gingen de Blue Angels vliegen en tijdens hun optreden brak de hel los en ging het heel hard regenen. We bezochten daarom maar een paar lokale winkels, gingen vroeg naar het hotel om opgefrist van een heerlijke maaltijd te genieten.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_tab_section av_tab_section av-3w90sko-9ac3b91804ddc61334365ba3ca1d1254'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div id='tab-id-3-tab' class='tab' role='tab' aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" data-fake-id='#tab-id-3' aria-controls='tab-id-3-content'  itemprop=\"headline\" >23 juli 2011<\/div><div id='tab-id-3-content' class='tab_content' role='tabpanel' aria-labelledby='tab-id-3-tab' aria-hidden=\"true\"><div class='tab_inner_content invers-color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Op zaterdag 23 juli vertrokken we weer vroeg naar het vliegveld, ongeveer 20 minuten rijden, en waren als een van de eersten op het veld. Ook nu was er weer een flinke bui, maar toen die voorbij was werd het een superdag. De static was goed te fotograferen evenals de show in de lucht. Als bonus kwamen er nog een B-1 en B-2 voorbij. Om 17.00 uur ging het veld dicht en werd iedereen verzocht het terrein te verlaten.\u00a0 We hadden nu een rit van ongeveer drie uur voor de boeg naar Dayton (Ohio). Op het moment dat we op de snelweg kwamen ging het hard regenen. Even later ging het nog iets harder regenen en na een uur was het nog niet droog en kwam het werkelijk met bakken uit de hemel. Je zag geen hand meer voor ogen door het water uit de lucht en opspattende water van andere auto\u2019s en vanaf de grond. Tijd voor een pauze en een lekkere maaltijd.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_tab_section av_tab_section av-3blztm0-e95ca9beb5aaed79f0c7cc8b298f530e'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div id='tab-id-4-tab' class='tab' role='tab' aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" data-fake-id='#tab-id-4' aria-controls='tab-id-4-content'  itemprop=\"headline\" >24 juli 2011<\/div><div id='tab-id-4-content' class='tab_content' role='tabpanel' aria-labelledby='tab-id-4-tab' aria-hidden=\"true\"><div class='tab_inner_content invers-color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Ook op zondagmorgen waren we weer lekker op tijd. Ditmaal bij het vliegveld van Dayton. Voor Europese begrippen waren we vrij laat, na negen uur, maar we stonden vooraan in de rij bij het parkeren. De static was ruim opgezet en omdat er niet zoveel mensen waren kon alles goed vastgelegd worden. De civiele vliegoperaties gingen ook gewoon door en in de vroege middag begon de feitelijke vliegshow. Ook hier weer een flinke variatie aan kleine civiele luchtvaart en militair machtsvertoon. In de late namiddag dreigde er een bui te komen. Het was erg jammer dat de Thunderbirds een grondshow van een dik uur deden en daarom maar tijd hadden voor twee\/drie passes voordat het hier lichtjes begon te regenen en hun demonstratie werd geannuleerd. Als ze de grondshow hadden ingekort had iedereen meer waar voor zijn\/haar geld gekregen. De Amerikanen verlieten massaal het veld maar wij bleven nog even hangen om na de paar druppels mooie foto\u2019s in de zonneschijn te maken.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_tab_section av_tab_section av-33z64rs-9b15dabba054eed5d64d195512acc3b9'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div id='tab-id-5-tab' class='tab' role='tab' aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" data-fake-id='#tab-id-5' aria-controls='tab-id-5-content'  itemprop=\"headline\" >25 juli 2011<\/div><div id='tab-id-5-content' class='tab_content' role='tabpanel' aria-labelledby='tab-id-5-tab' aria-hidden=\"true\"><div class='tab_inner_content invers-color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Op maandag (25 juli) stond het immense National Museum of the United States Air Force op het programma. Hier staan drie grote hallen vol met vliegtuigen, een aantal toestellen staan nog buiten (in afwachting van de bouw van de vierde hal) en op het operationele gedeelte staan nog twee hallen met presidentiele en experimentele vliegtuigen. Omdat we vandaag weer richting Chicago moesten (ongeveer 500 km) hadden we niet super veel tijd. Maar we waren er vroeg en iedereen kon genieten van dit perfecte museum. De totale geschiedenis van de Amerikaanse militaire luchtvaart is hier te aanschouwen, van de eerste Wright Flyer tot de B-2, alles is aanwezig.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_tab_section av_tab_section av-9k4xpk-cfbf3f87d43a011f90e6011676830b4a'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div id='tab-id-6-tab' class='tab' role='tab' aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" data-fake-id='#tab-id-6' aria-controls='tab-id-6-content'  itemprop=\"headline\" >26\/27\/28\/29 juli 2011<\/div><div id='tab-id-6-content' class='tab_content' role='tabpanel' aria-labelledby='tab-id-6-tab' aria-hidden=\"true\"><div class='tab_inner_content invers-color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>De voorbije dagen waren een simpele introductie voor de hoofdacte van de tour; de EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh. We arriveerden hier in stralende zonneschijn op de ochtend van dinsdag 26 juli. Volgens de offici\u00eble gegevens waren er 2522 vliegtuigen tentoongesteld en hebben meer dan 10.000 vliegtuigen Oshkosh en de paar omliggende vliegvelden gedurende de week bezocht. Duizenden bezoekers hebben hun toestel naast de baan geparkeerd in het gras en hun tent ernaast opgebouwd. Bijna allemaal zijn deze per type\/versie naast elkaar geparkeerd.<\/p>\n<p>Het vliegveld is ingedeeld in een aantal gebieden: Warbirds, Homebuilt, Vintage en Ultralight &amp; Rotorcraft. Verder is er nog het Airventure museum, Pioneer Airport voor rondvluchten met helikopters, een tentoonstellingsgebied voor alle zaken op het gebied van de lichte luchtvaart en de watervliegtuigbasis buiten het vliegveld. Centraal ligt het Conoco Philips Plaza waar elke dag vliegtuigen met het thema van die dag te zien zijn. Al deze gebieden zijn met elkaar verbonden en kun je rustig heen lopen, maar zijn ook te bezoeken met gratis bussen en tractoren met karretjes. Elke dag heeft een ander thema en elke dag komen er vliegtuigen bij of gaan er vliegtuigen weg, of maakt de eigenaar even lekker een vluchtje of maakt deel uit van \u00e9\u00e9n van de vele onderdelen in het vliegprogramma.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_tab_section av_tab_section av-1y7umaw-50f65c9ff3e26a80666dfd895198c2d0'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div id='tab-id-7-tab' class='tab' role='tab' aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" data-fake-id='#tab-id-7' aria-controls='tab-id-7-content'  itemprop=\"headline\" >30 juli 2011<\/div><div id='tab-id-7-content' class='tab_content' role='tabpanel' aria-labelledby='tab-id-7-tab' aria-hidden=\"true\"><div class='tab_inner_content invers-color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Tot en met zaterdag 30 juli zijn we elke dag rond 09.00 uur op het vliegveld aangekomen en vertrokken we weer tussen 18.00 en 20.00uur. Je verveelt je geen moment en je hebt het idee dat je nog lang niet alles het gezien. Een paar keer is ook hier een flinke bui geweest, maar over het algemeen hadden we prachtig weer met veel zonneschijn. Op zaterdag zijn overigens al veel bezoekende toestellen verdwenen. Ze hebben de tent opgevouwen en zijn weer op weg naar huis. Hoogtepunten zijn er te veel om op te noemen en liggen voor iedereen anders, maar een vliegende Boeing B-29 Stratofortress, bezoekende prototype Boeing B787 of rijen met homebuilts, Cessna 195\u2019s, P-51 Mustangs, T-6 Harvards, T-34\u2019s of Yaks zijn toch wel erg indrukwekkend.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_tab_section av_tab_section av-1tgbmx4-b75dd991bd00b2ba027559cb0b2f4d4c'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div id='tab-id-8-tab' class='tab' role='tab' aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" data-fake-id='#tab-id-8' aria-controls='tab-id-8-content'  itemprop=\"headline\" >31 juli 2011<\/div><div id='tab-id-8-content' class='tab_content' role='tabpanel' aria-labelledby='tab-id-8-tab' aria-hidden=\"true\"><div class='tab_inner_content invers-color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Op zondagmorgen werd uitgeslapen en aanvaarden we de reis naar Chicago. De reisleider was die dag jarig en dat lieten de reizigers niet onopgemerkt door dit om te laten roepen en het \u2018lang zal \u2018ie leven\u2019 op elk moment in te zetten. In restaurants, de Apple Store en zelfs in de volle Aer Lingus Airbus 330 tijdens de terugvlucht.
