In 2025, we paid another visit to the Athens Flying Week at Tanagra in Greece. It was yet another worthwhile visit to Greece, offering good quality photos of the rarer Hellenic armed forces types and other interesting hardware.

3 September 2025

On Wednesday 3 September 2025, our 5th tour for the Athens Flying Week, started at Eindhoven Airport. Ten participants, out of the fourteen, took the early Transavia flight to Athens on this day. Since the 4Aviation group also included participants from Australia, Canada and Japan, the remaining four had arranged their own flights and the group met up at Athens Airport.

After collecting the two rental vans, we headed for our hotel in Chalkida. The hotel, next to the boulevard with many restaurants and bars, would be our home base for the next six nights. The evening was spent enjoying the local cuisine for the first time.

4 September 2025

No sleeping in on Thursday (4 September). This is hardly ever the case on 4Aviation tours anyway. Since all participants had tickets for the full event (from arrivals to departures), we had to show up at the base, for access, early.

Today, we would be spending all day near the “contact car” in between the runways. The sun was shining brightly (this was the case throughout the duration of the tour). Although some participants for the show already arrived on Wednesday, today would be mainly about arrivals. We were lucky though that the day started with several local Rafales and a couple of Mirage 2000s flying a regular sortie.

After this, several arrivals were captured. The Saudi Typhoon (already in) flew a training round and an F-16D flew a post-maintenance test-flight from HAI. It ended with the arrival of an EMB145H AEW&C, which performed a great low-pass before landing.

5 September 2025

Same procedure in the early morning (Friday 5 September) as the day before; pick up the breakfast bag from the hotel. Walk across the street to a local shop (open 24/7) that offered fresh coffee and all kinds of sandwiches to get us through the day. Next step; head for Tanagra Air Base.

The spotters grandstand was available from today, so we found our seats and spent the day in the aera of the grandstand. Mostly finding some shade though… Plenty of Hellenic Armed Forces activity today, both arrivals and rehearsals. The event is a good one to go to, if you want to see and photograph the less regular types (Navy SH-60, Army AH-64, Chinook, Air Force M346, etc. etc.). Also today; Italian arrivals (Tornado and HH-139). Another good day, that was celebrated with good food and a nice drink in the evening again.

6/7 September 2025

The actual air show was held on Saturday and Sunday (6 and 7 September). With our grandstand passes, it was a very relaxed way of enjoying the show. Being able to enter and leave the enclosed area, having a reserved seat, an elevated position, next to the taxi track, offering shade, etc. etc., added a lot to the whole experience.

On both days the show was more or less the same, with the Saturday show ending early in the evening. The static display was a bit on the smaller side this year. The air show was good fun; how about a Royal Saudi Air Force Typhoon solo display (unfortunately, the special colours one was unavailable), a Hellenic Air Force F-4E AUP, Hellenic Army chopper displays, a formation of a HAF Mirage 2000 and Spitfire, etc. etc. Picture all this in nice weather and good lighting conditions. Getting in and out on both Saturday and Sunday was smooth, so all in all we had a good time again.

8 September 2025

On Monday, 8 September, our passes gave access to the base one more time. Today, the departures of the participants were scheduled. It started with the arrival of a RSAF C-130, in support of the Typhoons. The day was a good opportunity to capture the aircraft we had missed until then. The unexpected return of the two Saudi Typhoons after their departure was a nice addition.

Since it doesn’t take a lot of time to launch a fair number of aircraft, the organisers called it a day around noon. After saying thank you and goodbye, we went back to Chalkida for a relaxed afternoon and the final night in the hotel.

9 September 2025

The flight back to Eindhoven (on Tuesday 9 September) was scheduled to take-off at 8 in the evening, so that gave us another full day in Greece. This day started with breakfast in the hotel, checking out and heading for Tatoi. We had arranged access to the Hellenic Air Force museum in Tatoi. The aircraft that are inside are in a perfect condition. Luckily, access to the outside storage area was possible again.

After leaving the museum, the group wanted to have a side-view of the Acropolis of Athens. So, we searched for a position where this was possible. A nice position for a group photo as well.

After that it was time to head for the airport, dropping off our Japanese guests in Athens first. The flight back to Eindhoven was a promised and back at Eindhoven the last goodbyes were said. It ended another very nice tour to Greece! We will be back in 2026 for sure!

It was not my first trip with 4Aviation. As before, I experienced this tour operator as highly professional, they know exactly the right spots where you can take the best pictures and, directions are preset-up in their GPS’s, resulting in no time loss to go around the air base. User friendly, because the tour leader is regularly consulting the participants where to go, and what to do. […] For me, it was also big fun to meet other friendly spotters and exchange experiences and ideas.
