4Aviation visited the Bucharest International Air Show (BIAS) at Baneasa for the fourth time in 2024. A small group of seven photographers opted to join us for a visit to this relaxed and rewarding event.

On Thursday 29 August 2024, the fourth 4Aviation visit to the Bucharest International Airshow started by a number six of the seven participants gathering at Schiphol. Lufthansa took the group to Bucharest, via Frankfurt. Arrival at Bucharest was on schedule. Also according to plan was meeting the final participant there and meeting the taxi driver that would take the group to the hotel for the next three nights. The hotel was chosen because of its strategic position. It was very close to the entrance of the airshow. This meant that going to and from the show could be done on foot.

30 August 2024

The next morning, Friday 30 August, we noticed that the hotel was full of aircrew. Apparently, its proximity to the airport was appealing to a lot of people. We walked to the entrance of the airport in time and were among the first people to enter in the morning. The Friday was the first day of the airshow, combining the show with some arrivals. The weather wasn’t very good, but the participants of the airshow could be captured quite OK anyway. The show and static isn´t massive, but contains interesting items you do not get to see anywhere else. Romanian Alouette 3s and Yak-52s for instance. A large number of Puma’s in the air show is also quite interesting. Other NATO countries were able to contribute as well. German Air Force Typhoons, French Rafales, Hellenic Air Force T-6s, Slovenian PC-9. All in all, a relaxed an interesting day that ended with good food and drinks in a nearby restaurant.

31 August 2024

For Saturday (31 August) the ‘real’ air show was scheduled. We did the same as the day before; enjoy breakfast and leisurely walk towards the entrance to the airport nearby. At the beginning of the day, the weather wasn’t too bright yet, but would improve as time progressed. The flying display started with a fly be of nine Romanian Air Force F-16. This was followed by an all-day flying program, mainly consisting of Romanian Air Force aircraft, with other participants in between (including two MiG-15s and a civil Mi-2 with a very ‘smoky’ display). What makes the Bucharest International Airshow especially cool is the twilight and after-dark displays. At the end of the Saturday, with the sun setting we would enjoy a Puma with lots of flares and some cool civil participants with fireworks. The whole was concluded by a fly past of a C-27 with two F-16s. Their flare dump was a very cool ending of the day!

1 September 2024

Departure from Bucharest to Amsterdam (on Sunday 1 September) wasn’t scheduled until early in the evening. This meant that we had plenty of time on Sunday to explore the environment. For that, a rental van was picked up early in the morning (while the participants were still sleeping or enjoying their breakfast). We spent the day visiting a couple of wrecks and relics in and around Bucharest and some interesting locations in the city. Unfortunately, the air force museum was closed for restauration work. Halfway during the afternoon, we headed back to the airport for our return journey (via Vienna).
