On Saturday (30 June), as usual, the gates opened earlier that the 8 o’clock that is advertised in the brochure. So, while the driver was on its way to his hotel, we were strolling along the flight line well in time. All participants went their own way, visited the museum, enjoyed the background stories of just enjoyed the quiet before the air show started.
The actual air show of the Flying Legends starts in the afternoon. Aircraft take to the air theme-wise. Highlights of this year were the P-47D “Snafu”, that made its first flight earlier this year, the P-38 of the Flying Bulls, the Sikorsky S-38 flying boat and the formation of three Spitfire Mk1s. The spectacular final of the show is the ‘Balbo’ (Balba refers to Italo Balbo, an Italian that was one of the first people to organise mass-formations). During the Balbo all participating aircraft take-off, followed by a mass-formation pass.
