In September we travelled to Greece again. This fourth visit to Greece in 2022 was to attend the Athens Flying Week at Tanagra.

13 September 2022

On Tuesday morning 13 September 2022, part of the tour group reported to Schiphol for their flight to Athens to visit the 10th edition of the Athens Flying Week. A second part of the group left from Düsseldorf to arrive in Athens almost at the same time. Some participants traveled on their own and arrived later. After arrival, the 2 rental vans were arranged and we quickly set course for a hotel for the first night near Athens. After check-in, a second shuttle to the airport was done to greet the remaining participants and take them to the hotel.

14 September 2022

Today, Wednesday 14 September 2022, it was a relatively early start as the group was expected to report at 8am at the entrance of Tanagra. Checking out from the hotel went smoothly, as did the small 1 hour drive to the base. After completing the formalities, we had to wait a bit for the badges and a goodie bag from the AFW organization before entering the base. On this first day, we and the other enthusiasts present were escorted to a position at the ‘contact car’ between the runway and taxiway. It must be said: quite a good location! First visitors were 2x F-15C Eagles from Saudi Arabia, of which one in special c/s on the occasion of 91 years Saudi National Day (celebration of the day of the unification of kingdoms Nejd and Hejaz)

Between the normal flight operations of the based 331M and 332M squadrons, a few more visitors trickled in for the show. All in all a nice day in plenty of sunshine. In the evening we checked in at our hotel for the next few nights in Chalkida and enjoyed the local cuisine.

15 September 2022

On this sunny Thursday 15 September we again reported relatively early @ Tanagra. Analogous to Wednesday, the group was positioned at the ‘contact car’ again. Today most of the visitors for the show weekend came in. There was also limited operational flying by the local squadrons. The highlight of today was the arrival of a T-2 Buckeye from Kalamata as well as a short stop of a C-2 Greyhound. Due to the changed wind-direction and thus active runway, this bird turned out to be quite camera-shy unfortunately.

16 September 2022

This Friday, 16 September, was marked as the rehearsal day. The photographers, and so were we, were now positioned in a n enclosed area in the crowdline with a grandstand that provided welcome shade on another rather warm and sunny day. In the early morning, several assets of the Hellenic Army arrived for both the static and the flying part. The duo of Team Zeus F-16s also arrived after both rehearsing their demo. The remainder of the day was for display validation. For example, the Hellenic Army flew several helicopters. The Saudis flew twice, once with the special c/s and once with the standard colored F-15, something that was of course enthusiastically received.

17 September 2022

Today was the 1st of the 2 show days. The group chose to be on the base in time to be able to photograph the static show without too much of an audience. This worked out well as there were no barriers set up (yet) around a large number of aircraft, including the T-2 and the helicopters. Also today we had access to the photographers grandstand. The flight program started fairly late to continue until sunset, allowing the flying display to be photographed in beautiful light.

19 September 2022

In the morning of Monday 19 September 2022 the last kilometers were covered to Athens airport and the rental vans were returned. In the departure terminal we all said goodbye and everyone left for their respective destination in Europe and beyond. The return flights to AMS, DUS, etc. went without a hitch. This brought an end to a nice trip to sunny Greece. Everyone was unanimous that the visit to the 10^th Athens Flying Week had proved worthwhile.
