Two large groups of aviation photographers visited Andravida in Greece with 4Aviation for the Iniochos 2022 Spotters Days.

27 March 2022

The Hellenic Air Force decided to organise two Spotters Days for the Iniochos 2022 exercise at Andravida, so we decided to organise two short trips to this event. The first group of over 40 photographers gathered early morning on Sunday 27 March for their flight to Athens. Upon arrival, we met the people flying directly to Athens and boarded our coach. After a ride through the beautiful Greek mainland, we arrived at our hotel in Patras. Time for some freshening-up and enjoying the vibrant nightlife in this nice city.

28 March 2022

An early start on Monday 28 March as we boarded our bus to depart to Andravida. A lot of photographers had gathered for this first spotters day and with strict COVID-19 rules, the entry procedure took some time. The weather was a bit dull and grey but flying started early with almost all participants taking to the sky. As the hours passed, the weather cleared up significantly, eventually resulting in blue skies. Almost all units flew multiple missions, with highlights being the IDF/AF F-16s, Hellenic Air Force Phantoms and a fly-by of a T-2. As the sun was setting, a beautiful warm sun made the aircraft and surrounding mountains look like a picturesque painting. With a lot of beautiful pictures made, we boarded the bus again back to our hotel. The evening was spent in Patras celebrating the success of the day.

29 March 2022

The following morning, Tuesday 29 March 2022, we paid a visit to the very interesting Hellenic Air Force Museum at Dekelia-Tatoi. We had arranged access to the storage as well, so we had a good overview of the complete inventory of the museum. As a bonus, we were allowed to photograph the PZL M-18 Dromaders and Tecnam P-2000s that were flying missions during our visit. After we finished, we headed towards Athens International for our flights back home.

30 March 2022

On Wednesday 30 March, the next group was ready to do the same. The majority of the participants gathered at Schiphol again for a ride on KLM to Athens. At Athens, the group was completed by those that had arranged their own flights to Greece. The same coach was standing ready for the group, with the same coach driver as for the first group. That meant that he knew where to go and what to expect. We ended up in the hotel without delay. Arrangements were made for the departure next morning and the group split up in various grouplets that enjoyed their meal and drinks in Patras.

31 March 2022

On Thursday (31 March) we got up relatively early, grabbed our packed breakfast/lunch and boarded the coach for our ride to Andravida. Probably the same large number of people as on Monday had gathered for the spotters day. The weather wasn’t very promising, but spirits were high nevertheless. The day started with take-offs from various participants, but it didn’t come to the mass-exodus all were hoping for. Eventually part of the flying was cancelled due to Sahara-sand. All in all we ended up with the majority of the foreign participants flying. The Hellenic Air Force managed to provide Phantoms and Mirages, but the large contingent of F-16s didn’t fly as much as hoped for. The weather improved a little every now and then, but we didn’t see blue skies this day. Interesting arrival was a Rafale of the Hellenic Air Force and the AW139 of the Cyprus Air Force made an appearance. The return journey to Patras, after the spotters day had ended, was smooth and many restaurants in Patras met part of the 4Aviation group that evening again.

1 April 2022

Friday 1 April was the final day of this part of the tour already. As with the first group, we visited the museum in Dekelia-Tatoi and its storage area before heading to the airport. At first, capturing the local active aircraft (Dromader, Tecnam P-2000s and Coast Guard) was allowed. But, after some time we were asked to stop taking photos of those. At Athens International Airport, we said goodbye to the coach driver. From here the group split up already, with the majority flying KLM to Amsterdam. The flight was late… so some things haven’t changed as a result of COVID-19.
