Bastille Day commemorates the historic storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, the event that sparked the French Revolution and brought about the end of absolute monarchy.

Thanks to this piece of history, 14 July (Quatorze Juillet) is a French national holiday, celebrated each year with a military parade on the ground and, of particular interest to us, in the air. The parade varies in scale each year, but provides an excellent cross-section of the current French armed forces, with all branches taking part.

Our plan is to attend the 2027 event in a minibus, carrying a maximum of eight people. On the 13th, we plan to visit Evreux-Fauville Airport, where most of the Air Force’s fighter jets usually gather for the parade on that day. We can also take a look at Chartres Airport, where the Army’s helicopters gather for the parade.

On 14 July, we’ll visit a spot offering a good view of this aerial military parade. This isn’t along the route where the ground-based manoeuvres are also visible.  The parade takes place in the morning. Afterwards, we can visit the centre of Paris, where a number of helicopters are often on display, though the Musée de l’Air et de l’Espace at Le Bourget is also an option.
